Read this first: 1 Samuel 31:8-9
Saul's fall spoils a wonderful past victory. David decapitated the Philistine's 'big man' and took his armour (17:54). But, now, they are able to do the same to Israel's 'big man' (9:2) and send out the news of this vengence as praise to their gods. Sin spoils everything, even what's good (Isa 64:6). How much we need our sinless Lord (2Co 5:21) to free us from all sin's power!
