They abandoned their towns

Read this first: 1 Samuel 31:7
Saul's failure ripples out wider and wider, giving the Philistines control over a broad area. This is the fruit of the Israelites' demand for a worldly king (8:5); they should have waited for a godly one to be given. We are grateful for national rulers (Rom 13:4), but our hopes in them are very limited (Psa 146:3). Only the Lord is to be trusted to bring us full and true justice.
