Read this first: 1 Samuel 27:9
David campaigns to take out some of Israel's rivals. Then he brings plunder to the Philistine king to maintain his acceptance by his enemies. Working or living among those who might suddenly harm us is hard: we need to be shrewd in what we do or say, to maintain peace if possible (Rom 12:18), whilst yet also being innocent of sin before the Lord (Mat 10:16-23).
