Read this first: 1 Samuel 26:13-14
As becomes clear (v19), David thinks the king is being badly influenced by those near him, so he first calls to Abner. Abner responds by claiming not to know the voice: an unlikely scenario which probably reflects Abner's despising of David, as exposed in the Goliath incident (17:55). Some proud people treat others as too insignificant to matter. That is not the way of Christ.
