Read this first: James 3:4
James's friends are passing through some terrible storms of life (1:2-3). In such times our way of speaking can turn sour: we may whinge, get angry, or turn on those who irritate us. Such talk may seem natural under stress, but it won't do us any good because our tongue is like a ship's rudder - where it goes, we go. Bad talk makes life miserable. Take care how you speak.
