Read this first: 1 Samuel 31:12-13
Saul's body is cremated by its rescuers. It's as though in death Saul finally offers the sacrifice he couldn't give in life (15:22-23). They then lay his bones below the type of tree linked to his rule (22:6) and fast to mourn him. Funerals matter: they help us reflect on a life God gave, and grieve its loss. But when it's a Christian we smile too, for what joy they now have (Phi 1:21)!
