Read this first: 1 Samuel 26:24-25
David's trust is not in Saul not to harm him but in the Lord to keep him. So though Saul acts like a father passing on his inheritance, David doesn't go home with him. Sin has so ruined us that nice words we speak today (even if meant) do not ensure we behave well tomorrow: we let others down. But when God speaks blessing he means it. He is our trustworthy father.
