Read this first: 1 Samuel 24:21
David has been generous and irenic. Saul plays on this to get something from him. When David takes power, Saul assumes he will behave like any worldly king, including himself, by 'taking out' rivals. So the king asks for an oath of safety for his family. Politics is a tricky business. Pray for Christians working within it to be shrewd yet innocent (Mat 10:16-22).
