Read this first: 1 Samuel 24:20
In a moment of honesty, Saul confesses what Jonathan previously told David (23:17): that he knows David will be king after him. More than that, he knows this will be for good as David's hand will strengthen the nation. Saul admits he's fighting a battle that he should not win and which God will not let him win. God's king will build God's kingdom, and none shall stop him.
