Read this first: 1 Samuel 22:3-4
It wouldn't help his elderly (17:12) parents for David to keep them in the rocky fortress with his 'army' of malcontents (v2 - who likes living with complainers?) So he asks distant family (Rut 4:13-17) to take care of them. The Bible commands such concern (Exo 20:12) and shames its absence (1Ti 5:8). In his darkest hour, Jesus ensured his mother's wellbeing (Joh 19:25-27).
