Read this first: 1 Samuel 20:35
It's the day after Jonathan's angry exit from a feast due to Saul's unjust hunt for David. True to his word (v19), he goes to warn David of the king, as they agreed, using a secret messaging system (v20-22), lest his father's spies see him. It should always be our intention to keep our promises (Num 30:2), no matter the difficulty it poses, the mood we're in or the cost to us.
