Read this first: 1 Samuel 20:27-28
Day two of the feast and David is still absent. Saul queries this and Jonathan replies that he asked to go home. Knowing they've spoken will now test Saul's temper (v7). Yet, was it right for Jonathan to lie? Yes, since he did so to prevent murder (cf Exo 1:15-21). But if we lie for selfish reasons (to hide a mistake, manipulate others etc.) then we offend God (Pro 12:22).
